Breaking Language and Cultural Barriers in Health Care
Effective communication with patients and clients is critical to the safety and quality of care. This 120-minute session will discuss the barriers to communicate effectively with multilingual families and expose the student to different cultural backgrounds. This session will also show how the Medical Interpreter Law applies to the healthcare setting. The key elements of effective communication that are the core component of patient and client-centered care will be highlighted. Case examples for discussion will also be included.
Advance Medical Interpreting for National Certification
The National Certification Preparatory workshop will provide participants with principles, methods, and competencies (both knowledge and skills based) to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the topic areas covered in the national examinations. This is a 20-hour workshop. scenarios that resemble some of the questions that might be in the final oral exam but no questions from the final exam are provided. Sentences are created by our authors and permission to re-use the sentences must be granted and permitted by the authors. This workshop is intended to provide you with tools for self-study to those participants seeking to take the national certification exam.
Preparation for the Oral National Examination (for Spanish Speakers)
This 90-minute workshop is designed to prepare you for the critical components of the CCHI and CMI oral testing competencies. We will review and analyze these components. You will see content in these scenarios that resemble some of the questions that might be in the final oral exam but no questions from the final exam are provided. Sentences are created by our authors and permission to re-use the sentences must be granted and permitted by the authors. This workshop is intended to provide you with tools for self-study to those participants seeking to take the national certification exam.
Cultural Competency: Immigration, Acculturation, and Implications for Social Identity
This 4-hour workshop will be an informational session with regards to how the attitudes and behaviors of people from one culture are modified as a result of contact with a different/host culture. We will discuss how you can apply the role of the interpreter and their functions. Course overview: Intro to Cultural Competence, Understanding Social Identity, Cultural Influences on our Behavior, Incorporating Cultural Understanding into our work.
Berkshire Community Interpreter Training
This is a 40-hour training that will prepare bilingual students to work as interpreters in a variety of community settings. Students develop specialized vocabulary and communication skills and learn the standards and practices of professional interpreters. Students will learn how to apply ethical principles for community interpreters to common communication barriers. Also, identify and describe the stages of a typical community interpreting assignment and how to mediate in community interpreting. We will explore challenges of remote interpreting.
